San Francisco in the USA

Standing on the west coast of the country is the great city of San Francisco in California. Reputed for the Golden Gate Bridge the city of San Francisco has been attracting visitors by hordes ever since the bridge was thrown open to the public way back in the 1930s. Though there have been a number of such bridges each surpassing the Golden Gate suspension bridge record by many times over, the awe and the amazement in the eyes of the visitor to the city is mind – blowing. San Francisco got a fillip because of the bridge that was one of mankind’s rarest of creations in those days. What strikes the people of today the most is that with a lot of technological coverage and computers around, it is certainly possible to design and manufacture these bridges in much less a time, but in those days there were no computers and engineering marvels were scarce. Standing through the tests of time, this one of a kind suspension bridge is still effective taking in traffic along its wide lanes as they cruise over to the Marin Bay from the heartland San Francisco. Being a construction on the US Highway 101 and California Route 1, the Golden Gate serves a very important link between mainland San Francisco and the Marin county. When dense fog covers the Golden Gate, it is a thrilling experience to pass over the bridge with clouds of fog enveloping you from all sides.

California is indeed gifted with some important cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Hollywood and Beverly Hills. The state of California is by far considered one of the richest and most wealthy states of the USA and quite rightly so since the state is bestowed with some of the most revenue earning cities ever known to America.

A little down the San Francisco bay is the Alcatraz island which is now open for tours and public during the day. The island used to serve a military purpose with a military prison and Federal offices at one point of time it now is a major park and is open to all visitors to the city of San Francisco.

The Fisherman’s Wharf is another place which is worth a visit in San Francisco. In fact even before the city was established, fishermen from nearby localities settled in the wharf for the Dungeness Crab that was available in plenty around the place. The fishermen have since left and moved deeper within the city but the place still retains its original name as the Fisherman’s Wharf. You can even get to see fishermen still in their catch and they would be glad to cook up some of the crabs for you.

Pier 39 is the only shopping center in the world that is built on a pier. The pier was built with the idea of letting sea lions stay on and make it their natural habitat but in late 2009, the sea lions moved out of the pier and have not returned.
